Dr. Matt's chiropractic story:

In the early 1990’s, when I began university, I always thought I would go into Medicine. However, several occurrences changed my perspective.

First, in 1994 I had the opportunity to go on a medical mission to Honduras. One of my duties as a general helper was to help clean children who had scabies and lice with special detergents. After several days of this duty, when I was walking back to our camp for an evening meal I commented to one of the nurses that I felt I had really made a difference. The nurse replied that yes it was good work, and then added that it was too bad the children would be infected again soon after the mission left. This was a pivotal moment for me. It made me realize that the medical mission was a microcosm of the western medical system – reactive care as opposed to proactive care. It could fix the symptoms, but not necessarily the cause.

Also at that time I had started to see my wife’s family chiropractor to help with some low back pain I was experiencing from working in warehouses to pay for university. In the initial one-hour appointment and the one-hour follow-up report the chiropractor learned more about my health history and made more nutritional, exercise and strengthening recommendations than my family medical doctor who had known me my whole life! The Chiropractor looked at my strengths and weaknesses, what was right with my health and what was a problem and helped me set out a plan to increase my health and stave off potential future injuries. To me this was health care, it’s what I wanted for my career and it’s what I get to do everyday!
